The most disorganized, unresponsive, and unbalanced legal process I have ever experienced happened under Special Master Allen Giles. Everything—from communication to clarity to basic professionalism—felt inconsistent, unclear, and, in my personal experience, deeply discouraging. From the very beginning, communication with me from Mr. Giles was minimal and often vague. Many emails went unanswered for days or weeks, and some were never acknowledged at all. Deadlines felt unclear and selectively enforced, while it seemed he extended ample time to conversations with the realtor and opposing counsel. Mr. Giles was frequently out of the office for days at a time with no backup contact or way to receive guidance. This continued all the way to the end, when he sent me the link to the “final” meeting 19 minutes before it began — a meeting he had mentioned but never actually scheduled with me. I had no documents, no preparation time, and was told that if I did not make decisions immediately, the process would take months longer and cost thousands more. In that same meeting, Mr. Giles appeared to still be searching for files and rereading the appointment order—three months into the process—while billing at $300 per hour. The sale of my home—where I lived for 20 years, raised my children, and invested everything—felt nothing short of a liquidation. After a realtor failed to sell it for nine months, Mr. Giles told me it would sell “for sure” in far less time. I later discovered this meant renewing the listing agreement without my knowledge and initiating rapid, repeated price reductions—sometimes multiple reductions in the same week, often at $10,000 each. In my experience, these reductions felt extreme and disconnected from the value of the home. The financial and emotional impact of watching the equity disappear was devastating. Throughout the process, I repeatedly asked Mr. Giles for updates on his steadily increasing fees. None were provided. I repeatedly asked for the opposing counsel’s objections and documentation. None were provided. For at least three months, Mr. Giles told me multiple times: > “As far as I know, Brenda’s counsel will provide a summary of their objections for your review.” That summary never came. Mr. Giles never followed up, never pressed for it, never set a deadline, and never ordered it to be produced. Instead, at the final meeting—again, announced to me with only 19 minutes of notice—I was handed a lengthy document with handwritten notes and expected to review it on the spot and make irreversible decisions. As someone without an attorney, this left me at a massive disadvantage while, in my view, opposing counsel received wide flexibility throughout the process. The same pattern was reflected in Mr. Giles’s billing. His final invoice contained almost no detail—just vague references to “multiple conversations” with the realtor or opposing counsel, but with no explanation of what was discussed, why it was necessary, or how it benefited the case. In the end, Mr. Giles billed nearly $7,000 for what I experienced as a straightforward matter: selling a $500,000 home and determining the distribution of its proceeds based on an existing Marital Settlement Agreement. During that time, I was given zero credit for legitimate expenses I personally paid—expenses Mr. Giles had previously acknowledged were necessary “to keep the lights on.” From my perspective, the entire process felt prolonged, disorganized, and extremely one-sided. Mr. Giles’s lack of timely communication, lack of transparency, and lack of structure left me feeling ignored, excluded, and financially harmed while fees continued to accumulate with what seemed to be unncessary conversations. A Special Master is supposed to be a neutral guide, someone who helps both parties reach a fair middle ground. In my personal experience, Mr. Giles operated more like a liquidator.
